Osaka flourished as the distribution center of Japan in modern times, and its economic prosperity led to the creation of a rich "Kamigata culture" led by the free and enterprising merchant class.
Cultural arts such as Bunraku puppet theater have been born, inherited, and refined in the area.
The culture and arts nurtured throughout Osaka's history are full of entertainment value, and the Osaka attitude of putting the audience's enjoyment first still lives on today.
Now that Noh drama, Bunraku puppet drama, and Kabuki have been registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, the value of Kamigata traditional performing arts has been recognized overseas as well.
